Jag Mehta’s bold shapes are non-traditional pottery. Their artistic quality places them more in modern art than simple utilitarian or functional objects. This is likely the result of his eclectic training which began in a workshop at the University of Puerto Rico and the Liga del Arte in San Juan, Puerto Rico, continued at the Jamaica School of Art, Kingston, Jamaica and Loughborough University of Technology, England, and more recently, residencies in China, Japan and India.

His ceramic pieces are made by coil and/or slab method which evolve from his apartment kitchen counter rather than a formal studio.

He had his first exhibition in 1979, a Solo at the John Pear Tree Gallery, Kingston, Jamaica. Over the years he has participated in Solo, Joint and Group exhibitions in Jamaica, Puerto Rico, The Bahamas, India and England. His status at the Annual and Biennial Exhibitions at the Jamaica National Gallery is that of Invited Artist.

His ceramics are in permanent collection of Jamaica National Gallery and in private collections worldwide. He holds a BS degree from Cornell University and an MBA from Colombia University in the United States.

Jag Mehta, an Indian by birth, now lives in Ocho Rios, Jamaica.
